Day One Hundred Eighteen

Any chance I get to soak in hot water and be scrubbed down and massaged I take it. It’s one of my greatest pleasures in life. So, when I heard about the Abanotubani sulfur baths in Tbilisi I had to go check them out.

Legend has it that the Iberian king, Vakhtang Gorgasali, was out flying his falcon one day when it fell from the sky. The king went running over to see what had happened to his great bird when he discovered that the bird was swimming in hot sulfur water. It was then that the king decided that this would be the location for capital of his kingdom.

These honeycomb shaped structures were built in the 17th century. Each dome is like a cap to an underground private room. Each room has a large pool or a small bath, and a platform to lie on where you get scrubbed and massaged.
